Once upon a time
Spirulina provides a window into the world’s oldest form of life, cyanobacteria, dating back 3 billion years ago.
Some indigenous tribes in Chad and Mexico have been documented to grow the algae. Since the 80s it has been commercially grown in the US, with China following suit in the 90s. Ironically, all research, production and consumption is found in the Northern Hemisphere, whereas its natural home is Africa where it naturally lives off consuming CO2 and sunlight. Instead of a commercial, CO2 emitting, farm which is 100% dependent on imported chemical fertilizer, we created shallow ponds to place next to an original spirulina lake with the main feed source being the lake; a renewable resource.
Working together with the Kenyan conservation authorities, Nasaru Naturals has been running experiments on a crater lake and proven that natural production can compete with inorganic farming operations.
The team has identified a hill next to origin Lake Natron where it is now building an all-natural farm together with the Maasai community. In mid-2025, the farm will start producing the world’s first all-natural, carbon positive, lake grown Spirulina on the Rift Valley safari plains.
